Patio Enclosures: Start With the Roof

Every way of closing in a patio starts with a roof over it. This page covers that first step; the drawing shows what each later step adds.

Steps 2, 3, 4 and 5 all happen in the wall opening: screens, then vinyl panels, then single glass, then insulated glass. Step 4 also adds the knee wall. Step 5 insulates the roof, knee wall and slab edge and adds a mini split heat pump. The layers of step 1, drawn in peach, are the ones covered on this page. INTERIOR GRADE 1 5 2 3 4 5 4 5 5

Detail of step 1 on sheet L-1

A covered patio is a roof over the slab or deck you already have. At the house it hangs on a ledger board fastened to the wall; at the outer edge it sits on a beam and posts. The sides stay open.

Every later step builds under this roof, so the choice made here carries up the ladder. An open pergola has nothing to hold screens or glass against the weather, and a roof built only for shade may not be strong enough, or high enough at the outer edge, for a glass wall later. If closing it in is the plan, say so when you ask for quotes on the roof.

Above step 1 Screens and then vinyl panels between the posts are steps 2 and 3, on Screened Porches. Glass and a knee wall, then insulation and heat, are steps 4 and 5, on Four-Season Rooms.
